Okay, I know I've done a lot of chocolate projects lately, but this is such a fun project for kids and adults! It also makes a wonderful and colorful Christmas gift when given in Mason jars or clear plastic Zip Lock containers. First off, buy a couple of pairs of cheap tweezers from the dollar tree. Melt Wilton candy melts in flavors such as milk chocolate, white chocolate and pink. You can use any brand of animal crackers, however, the cheapest I've seen is at Walmart. You can buy a BIG bag of Stauffer's animal crackers for less than $2.00 per 2 pound bag. You may also buy animal crackers at Costco. They have a huge container full of them.
You'll also need some round candy sprinkles (nonpareils) or rainbow jimmies.
Have the kids dip the animal cookies into the chocolate and shake off a little of the excess. Lay on waxed paper and sprinke with candy sprinkles. Allow to harden overnight or put in the refrigerator to speed up the process.
If you can't afford the candy melts, here is a recipe for inexpensive homemade candy coating. Click on the purple link below: http://www.happybirdscraftinghaven.com/search/label/Inexpensive%20Candy%20or%20Cookie%20Coating%20Recipe

I used to do this with the kids when they were younger. I think they STILL do this! They loved them and we would bag them up and give with Christmas gifts. I used the almond bark and chocolate bark that you would find at Christmas time. Your recipe for the covering sounds great! glad to add this to my recipes!
